The Rhodes Balletjes - translation in italics below

Voor de één is Rhodos de oude stad met zijn monumenten, nagelaten door de Joannieters. Voor de ander is het de Akropolis van Lindos, waarschijnlijk de mooist gelegen archeologische site van Griekenland. Voor weer anderen is Rhodos het strand, de bars en de wilde nachten. Maar wat mij het meest is bijgebleven, dat zijn de balletjes.

Ze liggen overal door de oude stad verspreid. Volgens de schrijver Lawrence Durrell komt dat omdat er ooit een tiran was die de stad probeerde in te nemen met behulp van een reusachtig, nooit eerder gezien stel catapulten, die in staat waren van grote afstand flinke stenen ballen de ommuurde oude stad binnen te zwiepen. Of die tactiek succesvol was is mij niet bekend, maar het heeft er in elk geval voor gezorgd dat het in de oude stad van Rhodos nog altijd vergeven is van die antieke ballen.

Dat speelde zich ruim voor onze jaartelling af, toen het hier nog het centrum van de beschaafde wereld was. Er is in de tussentijd het een en ander veranderd in de wereld; wat eens ballen waren, zijn nu balletjes geworden. Daarbij is het verbazend om te zien op hoeveel manieren de zo vriendelijke, wat buikige objecten vandaag de dag dienst kunnen doen.

Deze site wil daarvan getuigen. Panta reei, nietwaar? Alles past zich aan aan alles, en met De Balletjes van Rhodos is het niet anders. Kijk maar eens goed.....

For some, Rhodes is the old town and its monuments, left behind by the Knights of St. John. For others, it is the Lindos Acropolis, probably the most beautifully situated archeological site of Greece. Yet others associate Rhodes with beaches, bars and wild nights. As for me, what sticks in my mind most are the Rhodes Balletjes.

They're lying scattered all around the old town. According to the writer Lawrence Durrell this is because there once was a tyrant who attempted to take the town with the help of a bunch of giant catapults, the like the world had never witnessed before. These catapults had the power to launch sizable stone balls from a great distance into the walled town. I can't recall if this method was successful, but what it did do beyond any doubt is to litter the old town of Rhodes with ancient stone balls.

All that occurred long before Christ, when the centre of the civlised world was to be found in this region. Since then a couple of things have changed in the world; what once were balls are now "balletjes" (no English word comes close - the literal meaning is "little balls", but that would take no account of the somewhat endearing undercurrent of "balletjes"). It is actually quite astonishing to see in how many ways these friendly, somewhat fattish objects can be of service nowadays.
